Don't Panic First: Basic Internet Connection Checks
When emails don't arrive, the first reflex is usually to panic and think the mail server has crashed. However, in reality the problem is often much simpler: there may be a temporary interruption or slowdown in your internet connection. First, try to enter any website in your browser. If no site opens, the problem is definitely in your internet connection, not your mail server.
Turn off your modem or router, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This simple step solves most connection problems. Then check your connection with a ping test: Go to the command prompt (cmd) on your computer and type 'ping 8.8.8.8'. If you can't get a response, contact your internet service provider. Changing your DNS settings can also be a temporary solution.
Hidden Problem: Connection Latency and Solution
If you have an internet connection but emails are not coming, the problem may be in connection stability, not speed. If your latency value is too high or you are experiencing packet loss, you will have difficulty communicating with mail servers. Normally, the ping value should be below 50ms. If there is a delay above 100ms, this seriously affects email exchange.
When doing a speed test, look not only at the download speed but also at the ping (latency) and jitter (fluctuation) values. If there is packet loss, this may be due to modem settings, weak WiFi signal, or ISP. Switching to a wired connection, changing the modem location, or using different DNS servers (e.g., 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1) can solve the problem. At Şanlısoy, we provide expert support for your infrastructure problems.
